Apparent Wind

The apparent wind when kite flying is referred to as the actual flow of air acting upon the kite sail.

It is the wind as it appears to the kite flyer as he/she travels along in a particular direction.

It differs in speed and direction from the true wind that is experienced by a stationary observer.

An example of this would be if you were running on a day when there is no wind.

Although the wind speed could be zero, you will feel a breeze on you as you are running.

The breeze you feel is the known as apparent wind.

On a windless day, the apparent wind will always be directly in front and equal in speed to the speed that you are running.

On a windy day Apparent wind will be the combination of the true wind and the wind generated by your kite or craft movement.
